Reflections of Maui Half Marathon

We know why it starts at 5:30 am! It was warm and humid. The race started in darkness, but is started to get light just after 6:00 am.
The first half, I was consistant at a 10:30 pace. I hit the turnaround point at 1:08 so I was happy about that. My target time to complete was 2:15 so I was just a bit off but could make it up if I could be consistant.
But at the turnaround point, things changed. I looked at my time at mile 8 and I was going about a minute slower. Then mile 9. Not looking good. Somewhere between Mile ? and Mile ?, just past the stores on Front Street, I took this pic because I had to stop and walk. My IT band and Hammies were tight, my feet were feeling the pounding, my legs were tired, but the view was nice.

I mentally screwed myself up at around Mile 9. I know my basic math, but I was tired. I started counting down the miles to go, but when I hit Mile 11, I thought I only had another mile. Hey I was tired! So when I hit Mile 12, I knew I had another mile to go. SHIT! When I hit the light and turned the corner, I saw the Mile 13 marker and started to sprint. Since I knew I wasn't going to do 2:15, I was now shooting for 2:20.
This venue didn't have balloons to mark the chutes so I was running and it just didn't seem like anything was getting closer. WHERE THE HELL ARE THE CHUTES! Finally! 2:20:03 I missed it by 4 seconds!
What if I started to sprint sooner....what if I didn't walk as much....what if I didn't wait for water at one of the stops....what if I didn't take the picture...what if...what if...
Here are my stats:
Overall 412 of 1209
Females 214 of 799
Division 22 of 95
My goal was to be in the top 50%. It didn't matter if it was the top 50 overall, females, my division...If I was in the top 50% of any of these, I was going to be happy. I accomplished that.

Dave after the race. He ran well.
Overall 325 of 1207 (why are there 2 less runners on his stat card ?)
Males 167 of 409
Division 27 of 57
Hawaii
MAUI
This is the beach right outside our place. We just needed to cross the street and this is where we ended up.

Me and Dave at the Secret Cove in Maui. I'm wearing my finishers shirt from the Maui Half Marathon so this was after the race and my nap.
Oahu

We are with my Auntie Nancy. She turns 90 in December!
View from the top of Diamond Head. The buildings to the left are Waikiki and to the right is Honolulu. I'm sure glad I'm used to Mt Wilson. This was a piece of cake! The hike is less than a mile and 700 ft. elev gain.

10K
1:03:34
This is the same run as Aug 26. My time then was 1:06 so this time was 3 minutes faster. And that was after yesterday's CF. My quads were sore (and still are) from the front squats.
This is promising. Maybe, at some point, I will do a 10K at sub-1 hour.

Wow-my last post was Aug 26th? Well I guess I haven't done much.
Saturday, Aug 29th, was supposed to be 12 miles. But because of the Station fire and poor air quality, combined with the hot 75 deg temp at 7:00 am, I cut it short. Way short to about 5 miles. And for some reason, that whole run sucked.
Then a week later was 10 miles. Nothing, absolutely nothing, done in between. Another 10 miles that sucked. The fires were/are still going and I could smell the smoke when I woke up and running along Sierra Madre Blvd. I noticed on the way home, I only took short breaths. When I tried to take in a big breath, I couldn't. My lungs felt constricted. Smoke-no bueno!
It's a litte frustrating because the 9.5 miles on Aug 15th felt good. Each run after that has sucked. Why?
My eating has been good, not perfect, but good. I don't think I slept well the nights before. I've been training, but don't think I've overtrained. I find that part hard to believe from me. Others, yes. Me, no way! HA! I'm the one who is always looking for the easier way out.
So now the thought of running 13.1 miles in 12 days is a bit intimidating. I know I'm going to have these past runs going through my head when we do the Maui Half. I'm gong to want to stop and walk ALOT. I'm going to have excuses going through my head. I'm going to be thinking about the bad training runs and not the good ones. Tell me know to change that. I know it's attitude. How do I change something that is my nature. Deep cleansing breaths.
So here's a positive thing. Last night I went to CF.
Front squats @ 70 lb max. Not alot for many, but that's what I did so I accept that. It would have been nice to be able to do more, but for not having done this in about a year or more, I'll take it. Thanks Jer and Van for the coaching. I could feel the difference with elbows up. It's now a matter of being able to do it.
Then pull ups. Gotta love those bands!
The best part last night - double ups. Why the best part? Because I was able to do some! When Van handed me the shorter rope, I was able to do them. 17 of them to be exact. Yes I counted how many I completed. No I didn't count the number of attempts to do this. Eric said the trick was quick wrists. I kept using my arms, like how I learned as a kid. I didn't think I was, but Eric said my arms were going in circles. I need the mirrors! I thought it was funny when I did my first one, I quickly looked over to Eric in surprise. Just like a kid who just learned how to ride a bike without training wheels. Some things are just human nature.
